Me too says that SMTP-auth is a better option then pop-before-SMTP.

Trying to search on google should always be your first step towards
solving your problem.

Anyway there is also another system by David Harris which doesn't require
any patching to your smtp or pop3 servers but works as two different
programs  and can work with almost all POP or IMAP servers.
