This is to the OP, as a matter of curiosity.

So long as your favourite mail client supports IMAP, how does it matter what
format the IMAP server stores your mails? I couldn't care less whether it
is mbox or mh, so long as my client of choice, mutt supports IMAP.

Even if I am logged onto the server, mutt -f imap://localhost works perfectly
fine.
