AFAIK u should have LVM as the partition type in one of the four primary partition or 
one in the extended and / /usr/,/var partitions should exist in LVM..then you could 
say if you want to increase the var partition size..u could do that using LVM. Not 
used LVM so correct me if i am wrong..

I think you should resize the partition using parted or any good partition manager.
