The first Linux installation on my old trusty 386 was a 25 mHz
386, with a 512 mb HDD, and 8 mb RAM, with no net or cdrom.
This was an UMSDOS installation on a MS-DOS 6.22 partition,
with Slackware 1.0, with dual boot under loadlin. Slack was a
floppy based distro those days. I could have most things
inclusive of X (8 bpp) in less than 120 mb of hard disk space,
(minus data).

I had also installed the same on a friend's box with 4 mb RAM,
about the same time, but X would run out of memory ...

None of the current distros would run under such a box today,
except for those trimmed for embedded systems or such stuff ...

Login program will display the contents of /etc/motd (Message
