Reports on kernel errors, especially when playing with test kernels is
best sent to the lkml. And they would appreciate saner error reports with
more info on what broke. 

I am not sure about your error because you have not provided anything.
But did you all go through the requirements for the 2.6.x kernels? A
common source of problems has been that people have broken loadable
module support for which you have to install install module-init-tools
from rusty russel's tree in the kernel.org servers/mirrors.
