Most stock kernels are compiled with sound for module support
only. If "sndconfig" has detected your card, and your sound
tests are coming fine, the job is actually done. Juts check up
if "sndconfig" has already configured /etc/modules.conf for you
for necessary modules upload.

Not exactly, more like config.sys coming in before the shell/
command processor loads for use by any user. This actually does
the login process as well. "autoexec.bat" would be akin to
shell specific initialising files at login (e.g. .bash_profile
or .bashrc). By this stage the shell is already active for the
user (like command.com under DOS).

Sub : Changing default OS under LILO LOST #182

Edit /etc/lilo.conf. Put a line in /etc/lilo.conf:
default=oslabel # where oslabel is label the preferred OS
Then, Do: /sbin/lilo -v
Now next time you start lilo, default OS will alter.
