hello Mr. gandhi,
hit,
hdparm -i /dev/hdx
and in the information look for your harddisks support for DMA.
If present hit the following command to enable DMA,
hdparm -d[1-5] /dev/hdx

better if you are using redhat kind systems peek into the sysconfig 
directory.. Tuning the harddisk using hdparm has given major difference in 
terms of performance for me BUT do remember what you are doing.
wrong arguments can damage your disk.
