I have been using RedHat 9.0 from the day it was released and I can assure you the problem you describe hasnt happened with me. I also donot recall "many many" people facing this problem - atleast this seems to be one of the rare posting where someone has reported XFree modules dissapearing.
I donot have any idea about RedHat Support and how effective they are but I do fail to understand why you need commercial support for something which is one of the most widely used and supported software.
