In have both Debian Woody and Slack 9 installed. Under Slack it
is startx (icewm compiled from source).  Under debian it is xdm
with pre-compiled .deb  from stable. I get the  same message in
both "Logout  will close all  active applications.  Proceed ?".
Under debian if I say Yes, the xdm screen comes back.
