We have been using a custom made solution for this purpose. However,
Lotus was taken over by IBM and they have released some enhanced version
of this which seems to support Linux ( I could not spend enough time to
figure out the details, but its being integrated with IBM
Developerworks).

The product is still called Lotus Domino. We had tried the Linux demo eval a couple of years ago. Domino is good product. I am not looking for Domino, but an open source alternative.

Also some of the groupware product (check on Freshmeat)
may do what you need.

None that I came across, e.g. Outreach, dotProject, phpGroupware and..err..PostNuke.

More suggestions for groupware won't help, until someone has specifically seen this/implemented this themselves - there are just *too* many open source collaboration/groupware/CMS systems out there for me to evaluate, so a specific recommendation would be appreciated.

What I want, briefly, is:

-> To be able to visually design a workflow based on features like conditional routing and escalation.

-> To be able to visually design the forms that go into the workflow with features like access control.

-> To have an integrated documentation management system, which supports document indexing/searching, storage/retrieval with access control.

-> As standards based as possible. Integration is a major issue.

Is there any Free/open-source software, which may be used for automation
of typical office working. Like some moves an application. His boss
forward to Head. Then Head's assistant put this noting and head approves
or disapprove the case.

If there are more than one, then person who have used such softwares are
requested to comment on features and suitability.

What you are looking for is a workflow solution, ala Lotus Domino.

Even we have been looking for a mature/complete open source workflow solution, with integrated document management.

The closest I have come is in finding two separate components - a workflow designer/engine based on XPDL - JaWE and Shark at www.enhydra.org and a document indexing system - Lucene - jakarta.apache.org.

Stringing them together to produce something even remotely like Domino is a massive effort.

I think workflow solutions are a killer application for an enterprise and would work a great deal towards Linux/open source deployment in the enterprises. A single process might use hundreds, if not thousands, of desktops in an enterprise.

Also, I think it is great opportunity for open source based solution providers. I mean, what mass market application after the standard mail/proxy/gateway solutions?

Have I missed some very obvious solution here? Any suggestions? Please don't suggest "ERP" systems like Comperie or CMS system like PostNuke.
