Why not try out Debian- woody ?
IM very humble O woody is not for desktop usage. It's rather old but stable and is great for servers, if you can find drivers for some new hardware. If you are looking for a good debian make a hd install of knoppix, That works perfectly fine and I am using it for quite some time.
