I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 and would recommend it. If your budget is tight, ie. Its a good deal for what it comes packaged with. Dell's Inspiron 8200/8600 and also great buys. I will also admit that I am not going to buy another Dell product in my life, after the Inspiron 8500 and Inspiron 1100(which i had earlier). Linux works fine on both the 1100 and 8500. Though the initial install was somewhat of a bother taking close to 10 hrs on each. Mandrake/Redhat/Mepis/Knoppix/SuSE/Libranet(their latest releases) run pretty spiffy on both of them. If you are doing a Debian netinstall(which is the sanest way), all you need to do is ensure that you are using a 2.4.23 kernel(atleast) which has support for the builtin Broadcom NIC...or you can use a spare PCMCIA NIC to get through teh initiall install, get the latest kernel, and then move onto using the Broadcom NIC after recompiling Linux 2.4.23. Dells Pros - Cheap, Good/Decent Hardware config/ Lots of RAM and HDD(if you want), and a DVD-RW9on the inspiron 8500), BIG LCD screen, superb colours Cons - Tacky keyboard, Heavy, Clunky, Bad styling, Extremely incompetent support. Suggested laptops - Fujitsu Lifestyle, IBM(pretty costly for the hardware config), or Apple Powerbook(instalely costly) -- Sthitaprajna http://puggy.symonds.net/~zeeble -- http://www.fastmail.fm - And now for something completely different ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: IBM Linux Tutorials.
