Hi Friends!
Have been using Knoppix3.2 (hard disk installed) and Mandrake 9.1 on my
computer. Till a few hours back, my dial-up connection from Knoppix3.2 was
perfectly fine! Am using KPPP for the dial-up (sometimes wvdial) and external
modem. modem is on /dev/ttyS1.
Surprisingly, in Knoppix3.2, both KPPP and wvdial now refuse to recognise
modem on /dev/ttyS1, while all is perfectly fine in Mandrake9.1.
In Knoppix, wvdialconf checks /dev/ttyS1, but does not recognise it, though a
few hours back it used to. (/dev/ttyS1 listed in the directory).
Sometimes back did install a few (no, quiet a lot) packages using 'apt-get
install' from Debian 3.0 (woody) CDs. Post this installations, the KPPP and
wvdial was working fine.
While dialing from KPPP (in Knoppix), i get messages, 'Modem Ready',
'Initializing Modem' and hangs. Someimes get the next message 'Setting
Speaker Volume' (rarely). But wvdial says 'modem not detected'.

As said earlier, there seems to be no problem with the modem or the port coz
from mandrake9.1 am able to dial-up (and on mandrake it is /dev/ttyS1 so the
port is ok!). what cud be the problem? any pointers would be helpful.

One other thing. 'dmesg' shows ttyS00 and ttyS01 in both mandrake9.1 and
Knoppix, and no ttyS0 and ttyS1. But there is no ttyS00 and ttyS01 in /dev.
Why is this??

Thanks in advance for any help!
