I wonder what to say, so I call it an "interesting" discussion. From
time to time, in last 14 months, I find that someone on the list asks
for "Tally on Linux" availability and there are usual answers:
"I heard it was on the CD"
"I know from a friend......"
"I saw it on their CD..."
and like that.

The discussion has ended always just like it started, without any
conclusion, only to reoccur after a while.
I have been keeping low profile because I would look like an interested
party, so, let me now make it clear here:
As of now, Tally is not available on Linux, nor have they announced any
plans for it. I cannot reveal my source of information, but this is the
situation. Tally never had any rpm or a Linux version so far, nor is
there any work going on in this direction. All this, thanks to their
close working (agreements) with m$ technologies.
It is unfortunate that just to run down the growing popularity of
Kalculate (www.kalculate.com), some people on this list, otherwise
respected by many for their "so called work on linux" have been raising
this doubt, thinking that Kalculate would be afraid of Tally on Linux.
One went to the extent of naming as part of OSS solutions kit for the
users.
We at Kalculate, would actually be happy if Tally or Tata-EX comes out
with a Linux version. Because, then, they would also come out with
full-page ads and high-voltage publicity (something that we have not
been able to afford till now) to convince-educate people on Linux's use
and that would be to everyone's benefit, including Kalculate.
It is known that Tata-EX sells 8 times more than Tally till the last
year, when Tally's sales went-up 4.6 times (due to their voluntary
disclosure scheme) and Tata's having decided to withdraw from this
segment. Tally's perception has always been of the highest selling
package, primarily due to piracy whereas Tata-EX has a tough lock that
pirates could not break.
There are many other packages on dos-win platform (3500 as per some
magazines) and there is huge market for this segment.
So, packages like Tally, Tata-Ex on Linux will only increase the
Linux-accounting market and things will be good for all, including
Kalculate, which has already got well established as the "First
Accounting on LINUX from India & Asia-Pacific".

So, if someone has a clearer knowledge that Tally is available on LINUX,
please provide it to the list. The other option is that the one who
needs it asks the company and gets it, while fulfilling his needs and
also informs the list of the package "actually" available on Linux.

Unless, of course, if we all want to keep going through such discussions
time and again........ one chooses oneself.
