what is your default run level ? seems its 5. it would be better to use 
xterm with default 5 run levels.

if you really need term then make your default runlevel to 3. use startx 
to go to x session and use crtl+alt+f1 for the terminal and ctrl+alt+f7 
for the running x.

i can not comment on the crash reason you stated.
