I have used the dachstein distribution and it worked very well. Dachstein is based on 2.2.x kernels. Berling for some reasons was not working on my 486 box. Berling is based on 2.4.x kernel. The default rules are ok, that they block some highly suspected packets. You can use ipchains, iptables to add/delete your own rules. Though lrp/leaf has their own script to add/delete rules to the firewall.
