Thanks for the so many valuable suggestions. Offline backup is not a
solution for me, as I canot bring system to single user mode for
backups. Root backups are critical for me, since our machine
availability is critical. It will give an easy way to restore a broken
h/d or compromise or failure in a 30 minutes- 1 hour time frame with
all propoer updates.

In some machines I mouting root FS on a llopback device using -loop
switch and taking a tar backup of that FS. It was successful in most
machine, but in some machine it fails. I will certainly look in  Mondo
& Mindi .
