For me, it has been Courier for the past 1.5 years now -
http://www.courier-mta.org.

Its webmail component, SqWebmail, is written in C, and follows a
client-server arch. You also get POP/IMAP servers as bonus :-) Its
filtering engine (maildrop) is certainly as good as procmail, while
being much easier to understand.

Supports LDAP, DB (Postgres/Mysql), PAM for user authentication, and
SSL wherever needed. Since it also has an IMAP server, should be easier
to hook in other webmail products (like Squirrelmail), but SqWebmail is
going to be faster.
