Not very sure about Tomcat/JBoss, but the problem that yu are
describing, i.e. when connected to net it works without a hitch, and
when disconnected there is a long delay before pages are displayed,
seems to be a dns issue only. try setting up your own dns server, or if
yu have an existing dns setup check to see if your domain points to
your IP and vice versa (reverse lookup)
for e.g.
host mylocaldomain.com
host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (the ip address of your machine)
also not sure if /etc/hosts file makes a difference with tomcat/jboss
