Use dos2unix to remove the ^M character.

If you open the file in vi, then do the following steps:
1. <SHIFT> : to go to ex mode
2. type %s/<CNTRL>V<CNTRL>M/
3. Upon execution of this, all the first instances of ^M will be replaced
by a blank.
