You need to pass it as a bootparam.(man 7 bootparam)
If you are using Grub then,
title Knoppix Linux (USB2)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-usb22 ro \
root=/dev/hda1 <bootparams here>
