I use an external usb hdd which mounts on sda1. I use it for backups. It
is formatted as vfat since I need to use it on other peoples's machines
too which unfortunately do not (yet :) ) have linux.

I had it connected and after the data was written to it, the machine
hung. I gave it 15 mins and then when there was no response to either
keyoard or mouse, I had to resort to the reset switch. I also forgot to
disconnect the usb cable while rebooting the machine.

Now I can't access the data on the hdd and /var/log/messages has this:

------------------------------
Apr 29 09:34:05 farzaan kernel: Attached scsi disk sda at scsi0, channel
0, id 0, lun 0
Apr 29 09:34:05 farzaan kernel: SCSI device sda: 8452080 512-byte hdwr
sectors (4327 MB)
Apr 29 09:34:06 farzaan kernel: sda: sda1
Apr 29 09:34:16 farzaan kernel: Filesystem panic (dev 08:01).
Apr 29 09:34:16 farzaan kernel: FAT error
Apr 29 09:34:16 farzaan kernel: File system has been set read-only
Apr 29 09:34:16 farzaan kernel: Directory 174: bad FAT
Apr 29 09:35:03 farzaan kernel: Filesystem panic (dev 08:01).
Apr 29 09:35:03 farzaan kernel: FAT error
Apr 29 09:35:03 farzaan kernel: Directory 509: bad FAT
------------------------------

What I want to know is how do I retrieve my data -- if possible using
linux. I could get access to a windoze box but I'd rather do it from
linux.

Is it possible ? any experiencces ? any tips ?

thanks in advance.
