I use a bash script called "checkinstall" available from: http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/ This replaces the make install phase. Depending upon your distro you may select tgz, rpm or deb, and things go into proper places. You may use the normal package removal of your distro (e.g. removepkg, rpm -e or apt-get remove etc) thereafter. The package database for your distro is updated at the time of installation. For me, this has worked for most common installations (though not all).
