I use a bash script called "checkinstall" available from:
http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/

This  replaces the  make  install  phase. Depending  upon  your
distro  you may  select tgz,  rpm or  deb, and  things go  into
proper places. You  may use the normal package  removal of your
distro  (e.g.  removepkg,   rpm  -e  or  apt-get   remove  etc)
thereafter. The package database for  your distro is updated at
the time of installation.

For me, this  has worked for most  common installations (though
not all).
