You can do it if you like. The security risks are the same as for any
other serivce that you provide on your system. Those don't change from
dialup to DSL or to any faster media.

By any other service, I guess you mean running a mail server, ftp server etc. I understand that the security implications are the same, as you say; since the network is homogeneous and not dependent on the method of connection (dial-up, dsl, t1 etc.)
