This may be possible.
Is there any way to know MAC address, to which one ping using
`IP number'.
Today when such problem arises, I went to room where that PC was
housed with few other. I tried to ping to that PC from a nearby PC,
it responded "Request time out". When I run 'ifconfig', it showed
missing IP number. Output of ipconfig is as:

For eth0, 2nd line which supposed to have IP address is missing. On
restarting `network' service, things worked fine.
