Hello, I have installed linux to dual boot along with windows 98 on a machine. The bootloader used is lilo and is installed on the first sector of the MBR. Now I wanted to change my bootloader to grub. So I used the grub-install script and I got the message that grub has been successfully installed.
# grub-install /dev/hdc //I have 2 harddisks and I have installed linux on the 2nd.
you installed grub on the second hard disk but the system is set to boot from the first hard disk where lilo is installed. That's why you still see lilo at boot time.
But when I reboot my machine, I still have the lilo bootloader. Is there anything I missed doing? My hunch is grub is not being installed in the first boot sector - if so then how do I install grub in the first boot sector?
Will running :
# grub-install /dev/hda help? I have windows 98 on hda drive. So I did not do this as I was not sure.
it will .I have the same setup and on my home machine and I installed grub on /dev/hda (first hd) and made an entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst pointing to FC2 on the second hard disk . Mind you, here you have to specify /dev/hdb or /dev/hdc for linux to boot off the second hard disk .
Raghu.
