You need to enable the framebuffer... and boot into a framebuffer mode .. using the vga=XXX type kernel parameter.
Arjun, do make sure that your Graphic Adapter is supported by the kernel. VESA normally supports most but performance degradation occurs. If you've got an Intel8xx board, problem might extend more.. In the latter case, refer http://i810fb.sourceforge.net
