Hello,
Recently I recompiled and installed the 2.4 kernel to compile the
ac97 sound support. I use redhat 8.0 on this machine. The compiling
and installing went allright and I was able to boot successfully with
the recompiled kernel. But the new kernel fails to load the modules
during boot time - gives an error. Now after booting, I did a lsmod
and it did not show any modules. So I did a
# modprobe -a
And it gave a whole lot of errors as shown below :
// Errors start -->
/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/kernel/drivers/media/video/videodev.o:
unresolved symbol __generic_copy_from_user_R116166aa
/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/kernel/drivers/media/video/videodev.o:
unresolved symbol try_inc_mod_count_Re6105b23
/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/kernel/drivers/media/video/videodev.o:
unresolved symbol no_llseek_Rd63df546
/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/kernel/drivers/media/video/videodev.o:
unresolved symbol sprintf_R1d26aa98
/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/kernel/drivers/media/video/videodev.o:
unresolved symbol kfree_R037a0cba
/lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/kernel/drivers/media/video/videodev.o:
unresolved symbol printk_R1b7d4074
// And lots more like above .. around 23524 lines of error ... ultimately a
segmentation fault.
// Errors End -->
Now I did a 'lsmod' and I found a few modules loaded one of which was
the ac97 module and I was able to play an audio CD successfully.
Though when I try to play a mpeg video in mplayer, I get the following
error :
// Errors start -->
can't open '/root/.mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory
Failed to open /dev/rtc: No such device (mplayer should be setuid root
or /dev/rtc should be readable by the user.)
Can't open input config file /root/.mplayer/input.conf : No such file
or directory
It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support, and read Xv section of DOCS/video.html !
See 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers. Try -vo x11
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.
//Errors end -->
Could somebody please tell me where I made the mistake? I think there
is a overlap of modules in the /lib/modules directory but I don't know
how to resolve them. Also I think the mplayer error is directly
related to the kernel not able to load all the needed modules....
Thanks in advance
Ravi
