I think the glibc rpm packages should take care of updating the
library without much hastle. Never done it myself.

Have screwed up my system trying to upgrade the libraries using the
manual method. Was trying out with a FAQ entry (Linux FAQ) on updating
the libraries, but the ld.so.conf files and ldconfig never seem to
work properly with my custom distro for some reasons. But made it
working playing with the LD_LIBRARY_PATH env variable.
