not offering a solution but its not because of cron or syslog. we've
faced a similar problem when the average didn't go below 1.00 despite
closing all services except sshd & network. so though CPU was 99.9%
idle, still the load average was 1.00
do yu have two network cards? is there any virtual interface sw0 where
eth0 & eth1 are in team?
