try this
first note down the DISPLAY variable of the local machine.
then take the display number from that ( last two numbers...the
numbers after the ':'
then on the remote server change the DISPLAY variable.
DISPLAY=<localmachinename>:<display_no>
or
DISPLAY=<localhost>:<display_no>
then try gimp
