Plug it in and mount it as

mount -t vfat /dev/sdX /mount_point

USB devices are usually recognized as scsi devices, atleast on my debian
unstable (2.4.18) system. X for me is "a". It might be different for
you. /proc/bus/usb should give you some pointers.
