RHEL includes a utility to do this - called certwatch. Comes as part
of RHEL mod_ssl RPM. It generates (right now, only for webserver
certificates) warning emails on pending certificate expiry (30 days
notice, I think).

For X.509 certificates, this command will work:

openssl x509 -enddate -in /path/to/cert.crt -noout
