Can you paste us the output of the command '/sbin/lspci' ? More
specifically, I would be interested in knowing the line relevant to "VGA
compatible controller". The idea is, to determine the video chipset, and
then configure X to use the driver specific to the video chipset
(unless of course, you own a vague/old video card whose driver isn't
available for X - in which case, you might have to live with 4 bit/8 bit
color).
