I think the time taken by the init scripts is genuine.. It does take a couple of seconds to initialize the services and devices. Yes, if longer sleeps are there, they can be trimmed. Another options that I heard about this topic was to get the X/KDM/GDM login screen soon as the init starts but it too has it's own limitations. BTW, I don't agree to the statement there that it takes 2 minutes to start.
