By "unstable", I mean totaly upgrade you system to "sid".

I accept that sometimes, ./configure;make... is necessary. However, I
still feel that if my configure fails, all I have to do is get hold of
the library which is needed to compile the software.

Again, it's a matter of choice.

Well, I don't see this discussion going anywhere, so I'd rather like
to sign off on a good note, feeling happy with the amount of choice
and alternate methods offered by Linux. Rather than argue about our
choices, I'd rather be happy that people have many ways to achieve a
common goal and they're happy with it!
