Edgar D'Souza wrote me aboute PXE (article published in LFY Feb,
2005). I wish to share it with list members -----

This is a software which we work with on our daily job. I am a Linux
support professional with a company called Online Productivity
Solutions in Porvorim, Goa. We install Linux and support it for our
clients.
We had been using PXES for a little time before this, and
thought it would be nice to spread the word about such a good project.
We have used LTSP in the past. However, we are doing our best to
convert the few LTSP installations we have left, to PXES. This is
because of one major problem - LTSP uses NFS to give the thin client
access to certain shares from the server; NFS causes huge problems
with a network which has even a tiny problem. Moreover, starting up
and shutting down NFS takes a LONG time, and the server appears more
sluggish with LTSP than with PXES - even though with PXES the majority
of applications are run on the server!

Whereas PXE creates a local filesystem from the initrd (intial
ramdisk)that includes whatever programs have been built into the
initrd. Since these will be in RAM, are available to be run locally.
Other programs are run on the XDM server, which the Thin-Client
connects to. Those programs use the resources of that server

Hence, we look at LTSP as a technology that is good, but not suitable
for any less than the best networks. Our networks (especially the
ones we haven't installed ourselves :) often have problems and hence
LTSP is unsuitable. With this in mind, I don't think too many people
would find it beneficial to try out stuff from an article of mine only
to find they have problems with LTSP, and give up in disgust! :)

BTW, as far as magazine articles go, "small" is one to four pages
long; this article was almost seven pages :). In fact, Fred Noronha,
who introduced me to the LFY editors, posted on our ilug-goa mailing
list about how large it was!
Besides, it was actually a little longer, but the editors have chopped
it down here and there to make it fit the available space.

Thanks very much for your feedback!
Regards,
Edgar.
