With courier, you do not have that problem in most cases. The problem is
if your users leave too many messages in a single folder. In such cases,
Cyrus-IMAP may show better performance, but you cannot use Cyrus
properly with NFS.

Cyrus-IMAP with a SAN, or lots of boxes with local disks.
