Hi ,

Can somebody let me know a very basic thing ?

In the output of df command in linux , the used + the
free is not equal to the 1024 blocks in total.

where is the difference in size used for , is it used
for filesystem information and if yes is there a
standard size the filesystem info takes?

Reserved Blocks. By default, 5% of blocks are reserved for the root user (UID=0) on every filesystem. You can change this by using tune2fs, or a similar tool for the FS you are using.
