apt-cache show kernel-image-2.6-686

Package: kernel-image-2.6-686
[snip]
Description: Linux kernel image for version 2.6 on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4.
This package will always depend on the latest 2.6 kernel image available
 for Pentium Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium III/Pentium 4.

So if you want automagical uprades for the kernel, install this
package (or a similar one for your architecture) instead of just the
specific kernel-image package.
