Found the answer! I found a machine exactly the same make and model number and configuration as the original machine and running Linux. Took the hard disk from the original machine and attached it as secondary hard disk (sdb) on the second machine. Booted into the Linux installed on the second machine. Mounted the root partition of the original machine's hard disk (now sdb) as /mnt. chrooteded to /mnt. Uninstalled the problematic kernel. Configured /etc/mkinitrd properly. Reinstalled the kernerl, took the hard disk back to the original machine. Et voila! Thaths -- "This is everybody's fault but mine!" -- Homer J.
