I guess putting it into a directory like /usr/share/fonts/... and
adding that to FontPath to xorg.conf would do.

Actually, even defoma uses the fonts in /usr/share/fonts, it just adds
symlinks to these in /var/lib/defoma and adds the defoma path is used
in xorg.conf.
