Hello! I was wondering whether it is possible to make static binaries
of a GTK2 based (very small) application. Though I tried, I am unable
to do so because I get many "undefined reference" errors.

Though building static libraries is unwise, I need to do this for a
specific application which needs to run on systems which may not have
the latest GTK+ libraries. So, could you suggest a way? Do I need to
getsome lib....a files corresponding to the .so files displayed by ldd?

I am running Debian Sarge.
