I am not sure about your hardware, but on IBM ThinkPads, the Sarge installer with the 2.6 doesn't recognise SATA disks. The workaround is to first install using the 2.4 kernel and then upgrade to a later 2.6 kernel. You will ofcourse have to change references to hd* to sd* in your grub/lilo config, /etc/fstab etc. later.
