Not /etc/alternatives as much as debconf (which I still refuse to use for a whole lot of things I need customized) That, and their tendency to stick to very very old versions in stable, and even in unstable I still dont use debian - I use ubuntu. All that's good in debian without a whole lot of stuff that I dont like.
