You can find out the contents of a directory by using the 'ls' (list) command. So, if you change directory to /home/swarup (by doing 'cd /home/swarup'), press enter, and then type 'ls', it will show you, as a list, the contents of that directory. You can scroll up or down and see if you have the tarball. Similarly, if you want to check the contents of your Desktop directory, 'cd /home/swarup/Desktop' and at the next line, type ls.
