You cannot read/copy files off a Video CD like that.  Infact, that .dat
isn't really a file but an "ISO gateway" that allows access to a track
on the VCD.  mplayer and the likes use an ioctl to be able to read the
data on the VCD.

Your best bet would be to use one of those programs that can dump the
stream to a file in whatever format you want.  Alternatively, I believe
there is a CDFS patch to the Linux kernel somewhere.
