As far as I know this is gnome specific issue, nothing to do with
firefox. That dialog box in question is gnome specific.

You can use the technique described here to use KDE file picker
inplace of default gnome file picker, KDE filepicker allows icon
preview of image files/ movie files etc etc.

Maybe in gnome file picker you can do so, but I do not know, as I do
not use gnome as much as I use KDE
