I upgraded, and mine experience is as: Yesterday night, at about 11:30, started to upgrade Ubuntu from 8.04 LTS to 8.10 on my laptop using campus WiFi network. At about 12:00 night, "Getting new packages" started with message, it will take 7 hours. I went to bed with hope, Ubuntu will be upgraded by morning. Next morning it shows message, it will take 2 days more. The message was changing, one day, two day, 10 hours and like that.
Anyway, by 2:00 p.m. fetching of packages was over, again it mentioned "Installation" will take 8 hours, which I was sure it will not take more than 2 hours. This demand your attentions, to give your decision on replacing configuration files, so remain near your PC or Laptop. But estimate by Ubuntu was correct. At 09:35 p.m. laptop rebooted. If planning, you need good time. It took about 22 hours for me.
