Pick a stable version thats not debian stable (which will be really old, so
for debian i guess compromise and use testing), use whatever gcc the distro
comes with. dont try to up / down grade gcc versions if you can help it.

And if its an enterprise database stick to rhel or similar. You can do
other distros too but it saves you pain if you use one on the db vendor's
supported list.
